NATIONAL JOURNAL ARTICLE REVEALS ADMISSION FROM CDC OFFICIAL, LATEST CDC VACCINE STUDY DATA CONTAINED MANY CHILDREN TOO YOUNG TO BE DIAGNOSED AS AUTISTIC

OFFICIAL ACCEPTS CRITICS’ CHARGE, PARENTS SAY DATA WAS MANIPULATED TO COVER UP HIDDEN DANGERS OF MERCURY ADDITIVE, CONGRESSMAN WELDON ASKS DATA BE SHARED WITH OUTSIDE RESEARCHERS

Atlanta, GA – An article released Saturday by National Journal reveals disturbing new information about a Vaccine Safety DataLink (VSD) study by the Centers for Disease Control published in the November issue of Pediatrics. A journalist for the National Journal, Neil Munro, reports that Frank DeStefano, a CDC official and co-author of the latest VSD study, admitted the study contained many children too young to be diagnosed as autistic. The article quotes DeStefano as stating, “This is true.”

The study, third in a series, was meant to research the link between Thimerosal, a sterilizing agent added to childhood vaccines and pregnancy shots, and the explosive rise in autism which CDC says now affects 6 in every 1000 children. The increased numbers, which a study by UC Davis last year confirmed could not be explained by better diagnostic measures, is said to be caused by the steep increase in vaccine doses containing Thimerosal. Thousands of parents have reported a change in their child directly following exposure to Thimerosal-containing vaccines (TCV). CDC’s original study conducted in 2000 found children were twice as likely to develop autism if exposed to TCVs, but the study was never published.

Physician and Congressman Dave Weldon (R-FL) has requested an investigation into the data. In a letter written to CDC Director Julie Gerberding in early November, Weldon states, "I have reviewed the article and have serious reservations about the four-year evolution and conclusions of this study." And, "I found a disturbing pattern which merits a thorough, open, timely, and independent review by researchers outside of the CDC, HHS, the vaccine industry, and others with a conflict of interest in vaccine related issues."

Parents and advocacy groups say it’s only a matter of time before the public realizes the true impact TCVs have had on small children. To them, the latest advisories warning pregnant women and small children against eating mercury-containing fish is a good indication that more facts about mercury’s role in neurodevelopmental disorders are slowly coming to the surface. “It’s so sad that our children were permanently injured by ethylmercury thimerosal,” says parent Wendy Fournier of the National Autism Association. “It’s just as sad that it is continuously covered up.”

The National Journal article comes on the heels of two editorials in the Wall Street Journal which have created their own controversy by defending a rider inserted into the Homeland Security bill in late 2002. The rider would have protected vaccine manufacturers from lawsuits specifically pertaining to Thimerosal.
